Message from Chancellor Leland Regarding Veterans' Day

November 10, 2011

Dear Campus Community,

UC Merced brings people from diverse walks of life together to learn and engage in the processes of discovery that will help us build a better world. Some UC Merced community members are veterans, and even more of us have veterans as relatives and friends. On November 11, thanks to the federal holiday known as Veterans' Day, we as a campus and a nation have an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices that veterans have made, the causes and possible solutions to war, and the ideals that we believe must be defended, often at great cost.

On Friday, the Merced County Veterans Council will host several events to commemorate the Veterans' Day holiday, including an 11 a.m. remembrance ceremony at the Courthouse Park Veterans Memorial. The remembrance will be followed by the annual parade in downtown Merced, which starts with opening festivities at 12 p.m. and the parade down Main Street at 1 p.m. Members of UC Merced’s campus community will participate in the parade, and I invite you to attend and show your support.

Sincerely,

Dorothy Leland
Chancellor
