UC Global Food Initiative

The UC Global Food Initiative grows out of a commitment by President Napolitano and the 10 UC campus chancellors to work collectively to intensify and expand the efforts of the world’s premier public research university to support healthy eating, sustainable agriculture and food security.

To ensure that students are engaged in this critical effort, the President has announced the creation of the President’s Global Food Initiative Student Fellowship Program. The Fellowship Program will provide each campus with $7,500 to fund three student awards of $2,500 each. Campuses may provide these awards to undergraduate or graduate students to fund research fellowships or traditional internships. The program will be funded out of the President’s Initiative Fund.

A systemwide symposium showcasing the students’ work will be organized by the Office of the President to be held in spring 2015.

UC Merced’s applications are currently available from the Chancellor’s website and are due by September 30th and will be announced in mid-October around UC Merced’s Family Weekend.

We are excited about this opportunity to recognize and support student research, service learning projects, internships, and humanitarian efforts connected to the Global Food Initiative.  We know we have graduate students researching plant ecology, others who are engineering creative solutions to agricultural challenges, and those students who are volunteering their time to develop sustainable practices and address food scarcity.  These are just some examples of the great work being conducted by our students and we look forward to honoring them by way of this fellowship program.
