Last week Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest tropical cyclones on record, struck the Philippines. The cyclone caused catastrophic destruction in the central part of the country, particularly on Samar Island and Leyte, where it’s estimated at least 10,000 people may have died in the city of Tacloban alone. According to UN officials, about 11 million people have been affected and many have been left homeless. On behalf of UC Merced, my heart goes out to all who have been affected by this tragedy.
The effects of Typhoon Haiyan will be felt throughout the Bobcat community. I want all to know that we are here to help and provide support. Students needing personal, academic or financial help should reach out to the schools, the Office for Graduate Studies and the Financial Aid Office. To discuss and understand emotions they may be feeling, students should contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Faculty and staff seeking help should begin by contacting the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
For all who wish to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, the American Red Cross is accepting donations and coordinating disaster relief on the ground. You may direct donations online to http://www.redcross.org. Click on “Red Cross Sends Support to Philippines for Typhoon Response.”
