Dear Campus Community,

UC Merced continues to plan for a fall semester that will look different in many ways but will remain true to the University of California's mission of teaching, research and public service.

Interim Chancellor Nathan Brostrom Joins 9 Other UC Chancellors and UC President Janet Napolitano in Support of ACA5

Body:

Interim Chancellor Nathan Brostrom, the nine other University of California chancellors and UC President Janet Napolitano sent this letter to the UC Board of Regents on June 12.

Dear Regents:

As individuals and leaders of the University of California, the crown jewel of higher education, we stand in solidarity in expressing our strong support for Assembly Constitutional Amendment 5, or ACA 5, the proposed constitutional amendment that would rescind Proposition 209, which prohibits use of race or gender as a factor in our admissions decisions.

Dear Campus Community,

Juneteenth — the 19th day of June — holds great historical significance for the Black community, and indeed for all of the United States. Also known as Freedom Day and Jubilee Day, Juneteenth was first celebrated on June 19, 1866 to commemorate the legal abolition of slavery in this country.

Dear Campus Community,

On Saturday I had the great pleasure and privilege of giving our chancellor-designate, Dr. Juan Sánchez Muñoz, and his wife, Dr. Zenaida Aguirre-Muñoz, a tour of campus, particularly of our newest Merced 2020 buildings. They followed up with a tour of downtown Merced led by Mayor Mike Murphy and his wonderful family.

In Solidarity

Dear Campus Community,

We feel both outrage and grief over the killing of George Floyd in Minnesota, Breonna Taylor in Kentucky, and Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia. These are unconscionable acts of violence. Their deaths, and subsequent nationwide protests, once again present our country — and each one of us — with the imperative to confront the enduring legacy of slavery, segregation, racism and oppression in America.

UC Merced Demonstrating Everything that is Right about Higher Education

Body:

At a time when national higher education is beset by admissions scandals, political winds and declining public confidence, there is a young but mighty institution in California’s Central Valley that is demonstrating everything that is right about higher education.
