Friends,
I am profoundly excited to share that UC Merced has received a second major gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, an extraordinary reaffirmation of confidence in our mission and momentum as we continue to grow as one of the nation’s preeminent research universities. This new commitment builds on Ms. Scott’s earlier gift in 2021 and reflects a deep belief in the work you carry forward every day.
This new investment – $38 million – will help to advance our priorities at a moment of significant institutional momentum while also propelling our Boldly Forward Campaign, UC Merced’s first-ever comprehensive development effort. This gift will accelerate our ability to expand research that matters to the world, serve students, and strengthen our role as a catalyst for opportunity and prosperity in the San Joaquin Valley, and beyond. It will enable us to immediately support faculty research initiatives, expand student scholarships, and complete vital facilities that enhance the faculty and student experience on our campus. Ms. Scott’s generosity will strengthen several of our highest-priority areas and accelerate progress toward our long-term goals.
Receiving a second major gift from the same donor is a tremendous endorsement of UC Merced’s trajectory and of the excellence, dedication and innovation demonstrated by our faculty, staff, students and external community.
As grateful as I am for Ms. Scott’s incredible generosity, please know how much I and the senior leadership team at UC Merced deeply appreciate you. Your work continues to inspire confidence in the university’s future and in the students and communities we serve.
In gratitude,
Juan Sánchez Muñoz
Chancellor
