Standing With Our Muslim Community

March 15, 2019

Dear Campus Community,

Like you, I was saddened and deeply troubled to learn about yesterday’s horrific attack on the Muslim community in New Zealand. With heavy hearts, we stand today in solidarity with and support for the Muslim members of our campus community, the Merced community and the world.

Working every day in an institution that is as diverse and inclusive as UC Merced, it is difficult to comprehend the kind of hate, bigotry and anger that can lead people to such acts of violence. And yet, we continue to witness attacks like this all over the world. In times like these, it is important that we come together as a community to support one another and ensure that anyone we encounter knows they are valued and respected for who they are.

Those needing help in coping with their emotions at this time are encouraged to take advantage of the resources available to them. Students can contact Counseling and Psychological Services 24 hours day at 209-228-4266 to speak with a counselor over the phone. For staff and faculty, INSIGHT , our employee assistance program, is an available resource and can be accessed by calling 800-422-5322. The University of California also offers substantial behavioral health benefits to employees.

While some of us may feel hopeless and powerless in the midst of seemingly constant news reports about one attack after another, we can and should support one another during such difficult times. We should be grateful for the opportunities we each have every day to make a positive impact on the world and those around us. Together, we can defeat the negative forces that seek to divide us, and move toward a future of peace and understanding.

Sincerely,

Dorothy Leland
Chancellor
