UC Merced counts among our students, faculty, staff and broader community many who have served in the military. Veterans Day is the time set aside by the nation to honor their service and sacrifices. They are our friends and family, our neighbors and our classmates, and we are deeply grateful for their service to our country.
On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom came to campus to announce state financial support for our Health, Behavioral Sciences and Medical Education Building. The significance of this historic commitment cannot possibly be overstated.
Our strategic plan calls on UC Merced to continue to create “a culture of dignity and respect for all” and “drive our campus toward exclusive excellence.”
On Oct. 11, we will mark Indigenous Peoples’ Day — honoring and recognizing the role of indigenous people in the long history of this land.

After an extensive nationwide search, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Delia S. Saenz, Ph.D., as our vice chancellor and chief diversity officer.
This week, we begin offering admission to the University of California, Merced, to more than 22,000 young people and their families — the largest number of regular first-year admissions we have ever offered. This is an inflection point for their futures, and of course for the future of our university.
