UC Merced Undocumented Immigrants

Body:

Dear Campus Community,

Last week I traveled with Boe Mendewala to Washington, D.C., to urge members of Congress to pursue a clean Dream Act to protect the nearly 600 undocumented students at UC Merced and thousands more throughout the nation. Boe, an undocumented student from India pursuing her Ph.D. in physics at UC Merced, was a compelling spokesperson, and I have no doubt she made a significant impact on everyone she interacted with during our trip.

Thankful - For You

Body:

Dear Faculty and Staff,

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday and a well-earned break, I want to express how much I appreciate the truly inspirational dedication you have shown to the growth and success of this university and its students.

We are a university on the rise, as evidenced by the increasing national and international recognition of our faculty research, tremendous success of our students, and innovation in campus construction, operations and sustainability. UC Merced is a special place, and you all play a role in that.

External Relations

Body:

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

UC Merced has experienced a number of significant transitions over the past year – from changes in senior leadership to major progress on a variety of campus initiatives.

As an example, this past summer I informally consolidated the functions that advance our communications and fundraising efforts with the hope it might foster greater collaboration and synergy. This was consistent with the new organizational model recommended by our Workforce Planning work groups as a strategy to improve our effectiveness and efficiency.

Concern for Our Students After Weekend Incident

Body:

Dear Campus Community,

Yesterday, approximately one hundred members of the UC Merced community and others joined in a peaceful protest motivated by the recent troubling incident that occurred at the Chandelier Hookah Lounge this past weekend. Those of us who have seen the video clip showing a portion of the incident can surely understand the fear and trauma experienced by people who were there.
