Dear Campus Community,

Today, the UC system hosts more than 2,000 military veteran students and their dependents, with many more among our alumni, who deserve our honor, care and respect. They come to learn, and we learn from them as well; our teaching and research are informed by what they have seen, heard and felt in postings around the globe. Their journey to a classroom may take longer than our average students’, but they often arrive with maturity, problem-solving and team-building skills, and cultural exposure that makes our learning environments so much more robust.

We take Veterans Day, originally denoting the armistice that ended World War I, to offer thanks for their service, the sacrifices of their families, and the service of countless others — fathers, mothers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings and cousins — whom we have never even met. Veterans Day honors their sacrifices and also their contributions, which continue to enrich our campus and our country.

With gratitude,
