Dear Colleagues,

Yesterday, many hundreds of staff joined what I have been told is the largest Staff Assembly-led discussion in UC Merced history. I applaud the assembly for organizing this important event, along with so many campus leaders who joined to answer questions.

My appearance at the Board of Regents’ virtual meeting, where I was advocating for funding for our next major campus project — the Health and Behavioral Sciences/Medical Education building — precluded my attendance, but be assured the concerns of staff, particularly in this difficult period, is of prime importance to me, and I will look for opportunities to join you in the near future.

A recording of yesterday’s meeting, with important information, may be found here , and the assembly will soon post and share responses to many questions that were submitted prior to the Zoom gathering. I know you have even more questions, as we all do. Because of the fluidity of circumstances, including the progress of the pandemic and guidance from state and county public health officials, on occasion our plans must change rapidly. We have communicated frequently with you by email and through the Campus Ready site and will continue to do so every time we have news to share.

I want you to know that I have great optimism about UC Merced’s continued rise, both near- and long-term, and we have a high degree of confidence in our plans to ramp up research, begin the fall semester and operate campus in a way that advances our mission while holding your health and well-being as the priority.

Together, we can do this, and together, we will.

Sincerely,

Juan Sánchez Muñoz, Ph.D.
