Role of the Vice Chancellor for Business and Administrative Services

UC Merced’s administrative structure features five Vice Chancellors, whose offices oversee specific areas and who report directly to the Chancellor. In addition to the Office of the VC for Business and Administrative Services, the primary units include the offices of: the VC for Planning and Budget, which manages the campus budget, capital planning, and institutional research; the VC for Development and Alumni Affairs, which enhances public awareness of UC Merced’s achievements and generates financial resources for the university; the VC for Research and Economic Development, which manages the expansion of a robust research infrastructure and a growing portfolio of intellectual property; and the VC for Student Affairs, which oversees student services for UC Merced’s growing student-body and the many programs that provide resources to aid students’ personal, academic, and professional growth. In addition, the administrative structure features an Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, who is not only the campus’ chief academic officer, but whose office is responsible for managing the daily operations of the UC Merced campus and works closely with the Chancellor in the formulation of the campus vision and the implementation of academic and administrative policies.

The Vice Chancellor for Business and Administrative Services will be responsible for providing executive leadership for the business and administrative operations of UC Merced, overseeing campus compliance and ethics processes, and communicating the office’s short- and long-term vision, strategy, and results to the campus. The VCBAS is a key strategic advisor to the Chancellor and a member of the executive team that oversees the execution of the university’s strategic and capital plans and other campus-wide strategic goals. In addition, the Vice Chancellor will serve as the official liaison to the University of California Office of the President, as well as to other universities, outside agencies, and the local community in matters relating to all areas of the unit’s responsibilities. S/he will lead a large division that includes:

  • Business and Financial Services
  • Human Resources
  • Facilities Management
  • Construction and Design
  • Campus Police
  • Environmental Health and Safety
  • Administrative Operations
  • Early Childhood Education Center

The overarching charge for the Vice Chancellor will be to support and build on the momentum of the Chancellor’s emerging strategic plan and to effectively manage and extend UC Merced’s administrative functions to support the institution’s core mission of providing an academic environment that is defined by both its commitment to excellence and to access.
